This is a beautiful abandoned church that I've photographed in Southern Italy. It is part of my 'CHIESA' series. 'CHIESA' is my biggest project and series thus far. I've photographed over 100 abandoned churches in Italy, and wrote about the decline of the church in the country.

Church buildings have been a mainstay feature throughout Europe for centuries, and one of my favorite things to photograph. From quaint country chapels to luxurious and majestic cathedrals, the “Old World” is home or has been home to hundreds of churches. Some of them are maintained in pristine shape, highly regarded as national treasures, while others meet a rather different ending, being left in the hands of time and its relentless way of decaying things. Italy is a perfect example of a country that, although greatly valuing its history, architecture, culture, and connection with the church as an institution, still features its share of abandoned churches.

Today, abandoned churches in Italy and elsewhere offer a unique glimpse into the past. A source of reflection, perhaps, as they prompt us to think about the future. If a church, once the most important haven in the community, can become a pile of ruins, what does that say about what we hold certain today? These are the traces of the past of many communities, and if we follow them, we can see where we all came from and perhaps where we’re going.

Photographed this beautiful scene at Ponta do Rosto on the island of Madeira.

Ponta do Rosto is a promontory located on the eastern coast of the island of Madeira, which is an autonomous region of Portugal. It is situated near the city of Machico and is known for its scenic views and natural beauty.

At Ponta do Rosto, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged coastline of Madeira. The promontory also features a small lighthouse that has been in operation since the early 20th century and adds to the area's charm and beauty.

In addition to its natural beauty, Ponta do Rosto is also known for its hiking trails, which provide opportunities for visitors to explore the surrounding cliffs and valleys.

Aerial capture of a stunning abandoned hotel complex on the island Madeira. The complex used to have 15 houses, has been abandoned for a couple of years, and is now for sale.

Madeira is a beautiful Portuguese island in the North Atlantic Ocean that is home to breathtaking natural sights as well as a truly distinctive local culture filled with lore and ties to Portugal, North Africa, and so much more. The island has been known since ancient times. However, it wasn’t until the 1420s that it was eventually settled by the first Portuguese colonists. The lure of this beautiful island, which had long been famed for its legendary beauty and lushness, brought so many people to venture far away from their homeland and jump into the unknown, quite literally!
